Why We Support Fletcher Street
Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club represents far more than horses and horsemanship. It is part of a generations-long Black cowboy tradition in Philadelphia — a tradition that has provided young people with mentorship, responsibility, community, and a place to belong.
As neighborhoods across Philadelphia have changed through development and gentrification, pieces of Black history and culture have too often been displaced, overlooked, or erased. Fletcher Street has endured those changes while continuing to show up for its horses, its young people, and the community that has surrounded this tradition for generations.
Their move to new stables at Fairmount Park represents an opportunity for a new chapter; one rooted in stability, dignity, preservation, and possibility. After everything this organization has weathered, they deserve more than simply a place to keep going. They deserve a place to call home, where this extraordinary piece of Philadelphia's living history can be protected, celebrated, and passed on to another generation.
